AUSTRALIAN MAILS.
NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE ORIENT COMPANY. POSITION CRITICAL. MELBOURNE, April 7. ' Tie Postmaster-General (Mr Sydney Smith) had a long interview with the representatives of the Orient Company on the points in dispute in the proposed mail contract. The negotiations have develoned into what is considered a somewhat critical stage, and the prospects of settlement are not considered so hopeful. The negotiations will bo resumed today. The Postmaster-General also had an interview with Mr James Mills, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, in connection with the Vancouver service- Mr Smith declines to state the position in either case. LONDON, April 6. Neither the Postmaster-General nor the Orient Company has received confirmation of the mail contract. Both have been inundated with ■ inquiries from shippers and merchants, who are anxious that the Ormuz should take next week’s mails.
