Helhwoll (district manager for Canterbury), who has been acting-manager during Air Stevens’s enforced absence, returned to Christchurch last night. Aim W. I. Crawford arrived in town yesterday from Palmerston North, tor the purpose of sending her daughter Helena, to tho Old Country, to bo educated under tho care of the late Air Crawford’s mother. The girl gives promise of possessing literary and musical talent, and will ho trained with’a professional career in view. All’s Frank Aloeller, of Napier, arrived in town last night, on her way to England, whither she proceeds by way of Sydney and Suez to-day. Before leaving her home, she was presented by the ladies of Napier with a handsome souvenir, as a token of esteem. During her stay at Home, Airs Moeller will for some time bo tho guest cf L ~ Beresford. *

Mr Bert Royle received tho following cable message from Miss Gertie Campion, who has been incapacitated by illness at Johannesburg for over twelve mouths past;—“Doctor forbids returning. Have arranged for my mother to come to Johannesburg. Please remit balance (Gertie Campion fund) immediately by telegraph through Reuter.—Gertie Campion.” This is interpreted, to mean that tho case of the bright actress, in whom New Zealand took such a warm interest, is practically hopeless.

During his stay in Wellington—from the 28th inst. to the 4th ult. —'General Booth, of the Salvation Army, will be the guest of Sir Robert and Lady Stout. Commissioner Nichol, who is travelling with the General, and is the editor-in-chief of the Army publications, will probably be the guest of the incoming Mayor of ■ Wellington. The other officers travelling with the General, and who compose his staff, will ho Commissioner McKie (the chief officer of the Army in Australasia), Colonels Lawley and Hoskin, LdeutenantColonels Qilmour and Kyle, Brigadier Cain, and Major Cox. Major Albiston, the chief officer for the Wellington division, will join the General’s party in this city and will travel with it to Australia. During the General’s stay in Wellington there will bo present in the city 130 officers, representing every town in the North Island where the Army is working. A memorial to the late Bishop Abrar ham has been laid in the floor of the ante-chapel at Elton. It takes the form of an effigy in grey marble of the Bishop, robed in surplice and stole. In panels on either side of the head are his mitre and the arms of the See of Wellington, and by his side is his pastoral staff, while the fishing net symbolical of the mission work of the Church is suggested in the inner space around the figure. The effigy lies at the foot of the font given by the collegers in 1850 in recognition of his services to them. The Latin inscription written by the Rev B. D. Stone may be translated: —“To Charles John Abraham, first Bishop of Wellington in. New .Zealand, who, constrained by the love of Christ, though he was enrolled among the assistant masters, determined that Eton must be left and his beloved studies'sot behind him, that, a greater work being begun, ho might instruct the uncivilised tribes in the Christian faith, his only son and Etonians have placed this memorial. He was remarkable for the excellent tone of his life, ho was firm in friendship, and to the end of old.age he preserved a robust intellect,' a mind keen and busy, never less old than when ago crept upon him.”
