Yesterday the following law' students were admitted as solicitors of the Supreme Court of New Zealand by Mr Justice Chapman: Messrs Alfred Henry Barnett. Michael L. F. Glcesun, Alfred Augustus Bennett, and Frederick Egniont Ward. Yesterday Admiral Fanshawe had a day's fishing at tho Hutt. Last evening his Excellency attended a ball given by tho Wellington Club. Ho will ho present this afternoon at the garden party to ho given in Sir Joseph Ward’s grounds by tho ladies’ branch of the Navy League, and in the evening ho will attend tho concert to bo given by the Xavy League in tho Town Hall. The warships are to leave for Auckland direct on Tuesday next. Mr Andrew H. Yule, late chief refrigerating engineer of the Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Matatua, who was stricken with paralysis of the brain, and was for four months in the Christchurch Hospital, died at sea on December sth, whilst Homeward bound by the Athonic. Tho deceased gentleman expired shortly after leaving Rio do Janeiro, and was buried at sea. Mr Yule, who was widely known in New Zealand, was representative for tho Hall Refrigerating Machine Company, and served as guarantee engineer on the steamers Dorset and Matatua. He was formerly second refrigerating engineer of the Indralema, and was for many years in the employ of _ Steele, Young and Co., London. Mr Yule was thirty-seven years of age.

Tho pupils of the Girls’ High School were very successful at the recent L'niversity and Civil Service examinations. Twenty-five qualified for matriculation, eight of these on junior scholarship papers, the first four gaining high places on tho “credit” list, viz,, Elsie Johnstone (fourth Mace), Bertha Reeve (eighth place), Nellie Hildreth (ninth place), and Edith Hind. Ethel Law, Elsie Morrison, Ruth Waterhouse, and Xcllio Finney also passed. Tho following passed the matriculation and solicitors’ general knowledge examinations — Ina Stace, Edna Bannister, Henrietta Mason, Doris Gavin, Mabel Ranson, Sylvia Wakeman, Violet Ham, Kate Tasker, Florence Rose, Beatrice Ryan, Norma Fogclbcrg, Ellen Hunt, mid Katherine Fogg. Louise Maeko, Eva Gibbs, and Mary O'Shea passed matriculation. and Maysio Collie the medical preliminary examination. pupils passed tho Junior Civil fee. nntion, and all gained “credit” (i.o ; , gained 00 per cent, and upwards)—Elsie Johnstone (fourth place in colony and first in Wellington), Eleanor Cooper (thirteenth place), Vera Grevillo (nineteenth place), Amy Smith, Winifred Compton, Beatrice Ryan, Agnes Duncan. Mary Flux, Florence Rose, and Mary O’Shea.
