ARBITRATION COURT AWARDS.
DIFFICULTIES AT NELSON.. PRESS ASSOCIATION. NELSON, January 10. Owing to the awards of the Arbitration Court in connection with tho Labourers' and Carpenters’ Unions, several men are temporarily out of work. The minimum wage was fixed at A2 15s for carpenters, and tho employers are making this the standard maximum wage except for foremen. Consequently several hands hitherto receiving per week were offered £2 15s as from tho Ist January, and no overtime. These men mostly declined tho reduction, and threw up their jobs. Over fifty applications for permits to receive below the minimum wage were considered by the Carpenters’ Union, but many were refused on. tho ground that tho applicants had had charge of outside jobs and were fuilv comnetent. lii connection with tho labourers’ award tho Citv Council has given notice of dismissal to the lamplighters and all hands where night-work is required owing to the overtime rules, and has decided to have such work as lamplighting, cleaning gratings during a storm, etc., dono by contrTho dismissals following immediately upon the receipt of the award raised the question whether the Council was not break ng the provision of the act against such dismissals.
