A LESSON IN ROAD-MAKING.
(To the Editor “N.Z. Times.”) Sir,—A paragraph in your issue of Saturday referring to a complaint by tho engineer of the Mas ter ton County Council, as to the scarcity of labour, speaks of the difficulty of finding labourers suitable for road work. Tho writer has recently seen an object-lesson in road making, carried out under tho supervision of Mr C. H. Williams, the district road engineer, Marlborough, in the Pine Valley Settlement Block, Wairau Valley. The roads are being formed by a road machine, in charge of Mr 11. Oreig, road-master, and the work being done will repay a visit from anyone interested in economic road-making. The settlers in that district have reason to be satisfied with the action of the Government in making the roads in and about the settlement. I am told that the cost of road making has been reduced by the aid of the machine froni 15s to 3s per chain, on a width of 22ft road, with 12in crown, showing a saving of about .1348 per mile, as compared with other methods previously employed. In a country like New Zealand w'here labour is'so scarce the advantages of machinery of this kind should bo better known. It is. I am told, of great Value in the repairing as well as the making of roads.—l am. etc. PROGRESS. January 9,
