AUSTRALIAN SHIPPING.
LEGISLATIVE RESTRICTIONS. PRIMAGE CHARGE. ANNOUNCED. (Received December 30, 11.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 30. At a meeting' of oversea shipowners it was decided, in view of the restrictions imposed by the Seagoing Carriage of Goods Act, to impose a value primage of 6s 3d per cent, over and above the ordinary freight charges, as -from January Ist. This' is a preliminary arrangement. Later on a schedule will be prepared, setting forth the primage to be charged on various articles of merchandise. Shippers and owners of goods must make a declaration showing the nature and value of goods shipped, for the purposes of the primage charge. INTERSTATE" SERVICE. MELBOURNE, December 30. In connection with the agreement entered into by five inter-State shipping organisations, by which only the newer and larger vessels will. be employed, shipowners deny that the combine will result in a reduction of wages, though they admit that a large number of hands may bo thrown out of employment.
