LONDON, September S. Further particulars of tho fighting around Liaoyang last Monday and Tuesday state that the first day’s fighting consisted largely of an indecisive artillery contest. Tho efforts of the Japanese were mainly, directed to the Russian centre, while flanking movements were developing. Tlio Japanese repeatedly attempted to seize a round-topped hill near Chiaofansuu, which the Russian fire completely dominated. The Japanese shells fell within two miles of Liaoyang. The Russians admit that the Japanese located tho Russian batteries with marvellous precision. The Russians checked a dangerous infantry attack along the railway. Two hundred- prisoners have reached Mukden. ; Hie battle was renewed at dawn towards the south-east, but the 'cannonade was less violent. The Russians claim to have repulsed tho Japanese all along the line, with heavy Icsses, but few official details are available. A wounded Russian correspondent states that forty-six undamaged Japanese guns were captured, but of this there is no official confirmation. A telegram from Liaoyang states that the Japanese are getting round the Russian left flank, but this is interpreted to mean that General Kuroki has crossed tile Taitse river. Later news states that tho Russians have effected an advance along tla© railway southwards. REINFORiCEAIENTS FOR HARPING. TO CONDUCT A WINTER CAMPAIGN - LONDON, August 31. Tlie- ‘Daily Express” says that Russia is sending a hundred and sixty thousand of her best troops to Harping, in Northern Manchuria, to conduct a .winter; campaign.
