RUSSIANS LOSE THREE THOUSAND MEN. MOUNTAINS SEEMEID TO VOMIT FIRE. LONDON, August 31. General Sakharoff reports that the battle ot Monday last, which took place west of the railway lino, and resulted in tho Japanese gaining a position between Liaoyang and Mukden, lasted till 9 o’clock at night. Tho main attack was mado on tho centra and left. A Russian counter-attack culminated in a bayonet charge, and many of tho positions in the enemy’s occupation were retaken. Tho reserves repulsed a force which was attempting at 4 o’clock in tho afternoon to turn tho Russian right flank. Daring tho artillery duel the Russian batteries outranged those of tho Japanese. General Sakharoff adds: “The announcement that tho Port Arthur garrison had repulsed all attacks greatly raised tho’.spirits of tho troops.” General Sakharoff estimates that the Russian losses yesterday wore three thousand. French advices received from Liaoyaug state that one hundred thousand projectiles were exchanged during tho fighting on Tuesday. Eye-witnesses describe the engagement as a continuous artillery duel. Tho mountains seemed to bo vomiting lira.
