A RECENT COLLISION.
MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY. PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND. Juno 22. Tho collision which took place in Auckland Harbour between the steamer Wellington and tho barque Manui’owa on tho night of June 7th formed tho subject of a magisterial inquiry to-day. The Court expressed the opinion that tho master of the Manurcwa had been guilty of an error of judgment in anchoring in an imprudent position, Tho evidence did not establish a case of negligence or failure of duty on tho part of the officers of the Wellington. Confusion of wharf and barque’s lights had deceived those officers, but this would not have occurred had tho Manurewa been anchored further out. The officers of tho Wellington were therefore acquitted of neglect. The Court did not think they should suspend the certificate of the Manurewa’s master, but as the. collision was brought about by his error of judgment he was ordered to pay tho costs of tho inquiry. The damage to tho barque was estimated at £95, not including loss of time.
