The Slonnhird has temporarily deserted her haunts on the Wanganui river, and has voyaged from Wellington lo West port for a cargo of coal. She will resume her running to ’Wanganui early ilr Leslie If. Iloyinlds, C.E., inspected the fat 0,1 bar Inst week, -Ho found (says Clio “fress'j that the width of the channel was 12!!it and expressed surprise when told that a week ago it was only GOft. Mr Reynolds emphatically centradicted (he assertion that the bar was in a bud condition, stating that lie had never seen it better. At the tidal gauge there is a boulder embankment wliicii he will reemmdand the Hoard to remove, when funds permit. Two oil launches for Picton were launched at AncStland last week. One is a lid-foot vessel, lilted with a o-h.p. engine. and the other 23 feet, with a 1 1-3-h.p. engine. 1 understand (writes tho London correspondent of the -‘Liverpool Courier”) that four swift and powerful turbine steamers have been ordered on the Clyde foi- an important colonial and imperial service, which is not at present particularised. It would, however, probably be a good guess to say that the steamers are intended for the Pacific service between Vancouver and the Australasian Colonies. It is probable, too, that ero long similar vessels will supersede tho famous Empress steamers that ply between Vancouver and the Ports ot the Par East.

Tlio “American Syren” reports that the American schooner yacht Ingomav, while on her voyage from America to England to dr some racing, made the following consecutive days’ runs—3l, 258, 261, 250, 50, 71. 218, 256, 210, 235, 215, 218, 214, 110, 112, 1(51 and 111 knots. To run 760 knots in 72 hours is not bad for a little schooner, but to cover 1600 knots in seven consecutive days is almost as good. Tlio longevity of -well-built wooden vessels is illustrated by the recent sale of the schooner William Penn, built in Massachusetts in 1813, The collier Kohiku yesterday reached this port from tlio West Coast. In addition to 400 tons of coal from the &tat© collieries, consigned to the WellingtonNew Plymouth section of the New Zealand railways, the Kotnku has on board 500 tons of coal for Lyttelton. Tho sawmills recently started on the West Coast are causing a considerable amount of timber to be available for outside use. A quantity is now on board the Kotuku, consigned to a firm in Canterbury* THE OBAN BAT. The barque Oban Bay, which took from February 4th to Juno 21st to complete her passage from Liverpool to Wellington, was moored at tho Queen's Wharf yesterday. She bears evidence of tho tempestuous weather she encountered on her voyage, her sides being dull with rust that in some places has eaten into tho iron plates. Her hull below waterline is covered with sea-growths. The crow was busy yesterday in washing the : sides of the vessel with some composition, but a speedy application of paint will i have to bo resorted to to prevent serious depreciation, THE MOKOIA, The Mokoia cleared Sydney Heads at G. 20 p.m. on Saturday, and reached Wellington heads at 4 p.m, yesterday. For the first part of her voyago'sho experienced light to moderate S.E. to S. winds, with fine clear weather and a slight S.E. swell, followed by light and variable E. to E.N.E. wind, with cloudy but clear weather and sea smooth, until arriving off the New Zealand coast; then light easterly winds, fine clear and calm sea. The Mokoia passed tho Warrimoo at 1.45 p.m. on Monday last and exchanged signals. Following is tho Mokola’s cargo list for Wellington: cases fruit, 1650 felloes, 90 boxes tin plates, 20 cylinders ammonia, 300 bars soft pig-lead, 20 hhds. white spirit, 138 ingots tin, 58 ingots copper, 23 cases oil, 7 barrels oil, 19 cases books. 16 cases corsets. SO bags onions. 50 cases paste, 206 packages tea, 20 casks oggo, and quantity sundries; also transhipments ox Ormuz, Empire, Macedonia, Arnmac, Cooo yanua, Albucra, Cintra, Gera and Tyrian. THE WEATHER. TYPICAL NEW ZEALAND STATIONS. Tho following weather reports from typical New Zealand stations wore received at 5 p.m. yesterday: Mauukau Heads. Wind, oast. light; barometer, 30.18; thermometer, 56. General remarks—Fine; sea smooth. Now Plymouth. Wind, south-east, light; barometer, 30.13; thermometer, 49. General remarks—Rain; sea lumpy. Castlepoint. Wind, north-west, light; barometei*. 30.05; thermometer. 49. General remarks—Fine; sea moderate. Wellington. Wind, north-north-west, breeze; barometer. 30.05; thermometer, 50. General remarks —Cloudy. Westport. Wind, north-east, light; barometer. 29.99; thermometer, 49. General remarks—Fine; sea smooth. Kaikourn. Calm; barometer, 20.92; thermometer, 53. General remarks— Fine; sea slight swell, Onmam. Wind, north, light; barometer, 29.89; thermometer, 45. General remarks—Fine: sea smooth. Bluff. Calm; barometer, 29.80; thermometer, 47. General remarks—Fine. Strong winds to gale from between north-east and north and west are to be expected at all places southward of Napier, Taupe and Raglan, generally with rain. Tlio barometer will fall everywhere, and will probably bo unusually low on the 21th. R, A. EDWIN.
