A NEW RED ROSE
A friend (a large grower and raiser of roses) who saw this roso growing last year in the nurseries of the raisers, wrote mo at the time that I was to look out for it, as it was, ho thought, to bo “something good, and distinctly above’the average of the Continental new roses; a real crimson beddor.’’ I hnvo yet do see the rose, but I have just received a notification from the raisers, Messrs Pernet-Ducher, of Lyons, that it will bo distributed this autumn. It is a Hybrid Tea, tho sood parent, that excellent decorative ' garden Rose„Mme Abel Cbateuay, fertilised with the old Hybrid Perpetual Pishor Holmes; and the raisers describe it as having ail the vigour, constitution and freerblooming qualities of the former, coupled with the brilliant colour of the latter. If this be so, we have in Etoilo do France an" excellent rose that we shall all want to grow. Let us hope it will fulfil all the requirements of a good crimson bedder. I look forward, I must admit, with rather more than my usual amount of sanguineness when I remember what a series of “great roses’” we have had from this well-known firm in tho past. To mention only a few, there is Caroline Testout now that we have a climbing sport, possibly the finest all round rose of the present day; Souvenir de President Carnot, a lovely roso that is not half enough grown; Mine Abel Chatenay, unique in colour and shape, and one of tho freest blooming of the Hybrid Teas; then Mmo Eayary and Prince do Bnlgarie, newer introductions, but both : excellent, etc. No doubt wo shall seo some flowers of Etoilo de France during tho coming season. Possibly , some of onr up-to-date rose growers have made arrangements to have some on exhibition at tho Temple show of the National Bose Society. Be that as •it may, I think all interested in new roses should make a note of it.—Herbert B. Molynonx, m tho “Garden.” The tea rose Grande Duchosso Anastasio has been rather overlooked, as it can only be found in one or two English catalogues. A writer in tne “Garden"'considers it is a first-class tea scented variety, not large, perhaps, but of such an exquisite globular form that it is surprising to him oxhimtois have allowed the rose to pass almost into oblivion. Tho colour is midway between Mainan Coohet and Oormna, and just the warm flush of rosy salmon with a suspicion of yellow so characteristic of the latter when seen at its best. Grande Duohesso Anastasie comes from a raiser, M. Nahonnan . who has produced many worthy s • and, like most of them, it is a splend. grower.
