For the opening day of its winter meeting tho Utalti Maori Racing Club was favoured with .splendid weather yesterday. There was a largo attendance, including several hundred visitors train Wellington. The holds throughout wero hn-go» ami some intero-stlng racing was witnessed. -Mr Charles Cliovannos. of Wanganui, made'his first appearance at the meeting ns starter. Although ho had a large number of horses to handle in each event, ho made even despatches throughout. Mr J. Ames and slalf had ft VO totalisators on the ground, and during the afternoon Candled £B3-17. which amount is £922 loss than tho opening day last winter. Tho Taranaki-owned Land o’ Cakes was a big favourite for tho Flying Hack Handicap. Parkshot, who hails from tho same district, got homo and paid the good prico of £l4 15s. The winner carried the colours of Mr Fred Stolir. owner of Inglewood. Scrapiro'n Jack (late Greenstone) appeared to bo second,
in which position Tomairangi was placed. Scrapirou Jack carried wrong colours. Tho Guesser was made an odds on favourite in tho .Hack Hurdles, and had too held settled before half the distance was covered. . Capulot. who was paying nearly £TO to win, tried to secure tho Kaukawa Cup from the word “go.” He had charge lor nearly u niiio, when VV*umoo went on and scored comfortably. The sou of Somnus was imlucy in both his races at V-'angauui, and is a muchimproved horse. . . Coxswain camo down in tho Gtaki Hack Handicap and brought Hatley and Silverleno to grief. B. Oliver (rider of Coxswain) sustained a fractured colarbono. T. Carroll (Silvorleuo’s jockey) escaped with a shaking. Waitarere appeared to havo Lo Loan's measure at any part of tho journey, and won with something in hand. * Tho Hawera-ownod Chola proved the best of tho Maiden candidates and put down a much hotter favourite in Athol Broso. - . ' In the Rangiuru Handicap xvarootic put in a brilliant rim inside the distance. fcud out down his opponents without difficulty. .Jlatuku was making her first appearance in the ownership of Mr J. McFarlane. Lo Beau was brought on again in tho Birthday Hack Welter Handicap, and ran a good race, but met more than his match in the Porirua-traincd Elihank. This made Mr Prosser’s second win during tho afternoon. C. Jenkins, who was on Waitarere and Elibank was tho only horseman to scoro more than once during tho clay. He was almost immediately steadied, and at tho half-mile post Parkshot was in charge, with Mourn next and Land o’ Cakes, close np. These three wore prominent at the turn, where Mourn lost his position.- Parkshot led into tho straight, where, Scrapion Jack and Tomairangi closed up to the leader. Waitarere was smartest off the mark, with Hatloy and Lo Beau next. Along tho back Coxswain took charge, Waita-rt-re and Le Beau lying second and third with Tho Ruler next. Tho fine field of thirteen moved off in line. Hautapu being quickest over the fii’st fence, and lie ran round the back just in front of Slow Tom and Francos Lovejoy. followed hy Hippowai. Up-to-Dttte’, Aka Aka and Princess of Thule. Tho fence at the hack saw Roseshoot come to grief, hut beyond this no change took place among the leading division over tile nest two obstacles. When they cleared tho hurdle in tho straight and made their way punt the stand, Hippowai had taken charge, and ran down towards- tho bottom turn, closely followed bv Frances Lovejoy, Hautapu and Slow Tom. A furlong further on Hautapu again hoaded Hi'-"owai, and, with Frances Lovejoy and Aka Aka well forward among tho others, the son of Mitiora continued to make the pace going through tho cutting, whore Un-to-Dato made a forward move. Thus they raced over the obstacle by tho four-fur-long post, but in the run across the topstrolch to tho homo turn. Aka Akai headed Hautapu, and Haydn also joined in.- When the final jump came to bo negotiated. Aka Aka had all tho best ot the race, and won by, throe lengths from Haydn. Tho remaining fences being down, there was a race on tho flat between Glasgow and Cavalry, but the former never really got alongside Cavalry, who staved off a challenge in good style, and won by a length, with something to spare.
