Governaut, the favourite, ran last but one. Tho King and tlio Prince of Wales wore present. (Notes by “Advance.”) Ones morn the French sportsman M. Edmund Blanc has had to put up with a disappointment at Epsom. lie has been represented in tlio English Eerby on several occasions during tlio past twenty years, and on throe occasions his colours wore carried by tho runnerup. Tins year, Gouvomant, who was sent across from Franco, was made first favourite, but tailed to get a place. Tho sou of Flying Fox was a good performer in his own country, and as a, two-yoarffikl scored three times out of live starts. The winner, St. Amant, has performed consistently during his career. As a two-year-old ho was seen out on live occasions, and scored three times. Ho was twice beaten by Pretty Polly, in tlio Champagne Stakes at Eoncastor and in tho Middle Park Plate. Pretty Polly went through lust season with tho great record of nino wins out of as many starts. This season sho pulled off the One Thousand Guineas, was not engaged in tho Eerby or Two Thousand Guineas. Sho should have no difficulty in winning the Oaks Stakes, run this afternoon. St. Ament’s two-year-old wins wero in tho Coventry Stakes at Ascot, in which John o’ Gaunt was second, the Prince of Wales Stakes at Goodwood, and the Rons Memorial Stakes at tho Newmarket First October Meeting. This season ho wjvs successful tn tho Tvro Thousand Guineas Stakes, run over tho Rowley mile course, in which John o’ Gaunt and Henry the First filled the places. This event was run at tho Newmarket spring mooting on April 27th. At tho Newmarket second spring mooting on May 11th, tho Eerby winner, could only get third in tho Newmarket Stakes, one mile and two furlongs, to Henry the First and John o’ Gaunt. ’The latest form gained Henry tho First many friends for tho Eerby, and his failure to get a place would bo a big blow to lus owner. John o’ Gaunt has throughout his career been most consistent, but unlucky. Ho is not up to tho form of either his sire or dam, who were successful in most of tho events that their progeny has failed to win. - Mr Leopold do Rothschild, St.Amant’s owner, has occupied a proud position on the list of successful owners in England for several seasons past. Last year ho was only beaten for first place by Sir J. Miller (owner of Rock sand). The present was Mr Rothschild's first success in the race. With St. Frusquin (sire of St. Amant) ho ran second to his Majesty’s Persimmon, in 1890. St. Amant has ton more engagements to fulfil this season. These include tho Eclipse. Stakes, one j)f the 10,001) sovs prizes, to be run at Sandown T>-,-k in July, the St. Legor Stakes, to V,o run at Doncaster on September 7th, the Jockey Club Stakes, of 10,000 sovs, to be run at the Newmarket First October mooting on September 29th. At tho forthcoming Racing Conference ,the delegate of the Taranaki Country Club will move, “That, in view of tho recent decision'in the Convoy-Gladsome case, the executive appoint a committee to revise tho rules of racing and submit draft copies of such revised rules to all clubs for suggestions thereon prior to next meeting of the conference. Mr James Jeffs, owner of Petrovna, has written to the Canterbury Jockey Club, formally claiming the stakes in the Criterion Handicap, won by Bagpipes last November, on the ground that the appeal judges in the Gladsome case decided that F. D. Jones, who rode Bagpipes, was not qualified to ride.
The brood mare Nautilus, by Tradncer—Waterwitch, was recently destroyed in Canterbury on account of old age. She was bred in 1877, and was the dam of Galatea, Teredo, Cynisca, Pygmalion. Bombshell and other performers. At a special general meeting of members of tbe Marlborough Racing Club, it was resolved that the members’ subscription be raised from £1 Is to £2 2s. and that the sum of £I2OO bo raised by tbe issue of debentures. Tbe money is being raised to effect certain necessary improvements at the Riverlands racecourse. including new grand stand, secretary's office and a rail round the course.
Steeplechase day at Wanganui has been referred to by sporting scribes as "a record rain” and “wet Wednesday." At the annual meeting of members of the Canterbury Jockey Club Mr G. G, Stead, referring to the five-shilling totalisator, said that during the Easter meeting the committee at the urgent request of a number of people, had introduced a five-shilling totalisator. It had realised that many people of moderate means did not care to risk a sovereign on a single event, and so had been practically compelled to patronise tho "silver bookies,” with tho result that they had been treated unfairly and even "welshed.” It was a fairly common occurrence for the small bookmakers to refuse to pay out the full amount on tickets they had issued, land the club had to bear in mind that people of moderate means were entitled to consideration. He believed that tho fiveshilling totalisator was a convenience that tho public had been fairly entitled to ask. Ballarat will not be seen out at tbe Otaki meeting. The, Geraldine Racing Club has a credit balance for the first time in twenty years. . NAPIER STEEPLECHASE. PRESS ASSOCIATION. ♦ NAPIER, June 2.
