THE HOLIDAY.
TO-DAY'S ATTRACTIONS. To-day, tho anniversary of tho birth of the Prince of AValos, will bo observed as. a public holiday throughout the colony. So far as Wellington is concerned tho attractions for tlio day are about as numerous and varied as could reasonably bo expected at this time of the year. Residents of the city will have au opportunity of witnessing two rexiresentative football matches—tho annual Rugby fixture to bo played against Wairarapa on the Athletic Park at. 3 p.m., and the Association game against Canterbury province, to bo decided at Miramar about the same time. In addition, tho Association enthusiasts have arranged a costume match to tako place on one of the grounds at Miramar. There will also be two matches of Australian football at Seatoun—Lcfroy v. Advance and Federal v. AU Coiners. At Day’s Bay tho annual hockey match between the Christchurch ’ Club ami the United Club will bo played. A convenient ferry service has been arranged, and boats will run regularly to the Bay and Miramar throughout tho day. For those who care to travel thero is the coursing meeting at Trentham Park and the first day of the Maori Racing Club’s meeting at Otaki. To meet the convenience ot excursionists, holiday rates will ho in force on tho Government and Manawatu railway lines.
Jupp’s Band has been engaged to nhiy at Bellevue Gardens Lower Hntt, during the afternoon. In the . evening a comedy entitled “ Tempest Tossed ” will bo staged by Sanford’s American Players at tho Opera House. Fuller’s Company are hilled to take part m.a holiday entertainment at i±is Majesty’s. Several new artists from England will make their first appearance.
