A NATIVE SETTLEMENT DESTROYED. 1 X’KESS ASSOCIATION.. WANGANUI, June 2. One result of last Thursday's flood was the complete aestrucuun ol a name settlement at Puugarehu, on tno Wanganui river. Flood waters came in'behind the settlement and carried away every suck oi limber. The natives lost five timocr whares, a wharepuni, and two food houses, worth altogether over ,£7OO. in addition they have lost their winter store of potatoes, corn and pins. Soundings taken by the Harbour Board foreman tw-day show that the flood has caused a serious scour around tue cylinders of the Wanganui bridge. The channel between two of the cylinders has increased in depth from 2Vft to 3oU, and at one cylinder the water shows an increased depth of from 7ft to 30ft, and at another from 18ft to 31ft. The cylinders were recently protected with hundreds of tons of atone, which has all been carried away.
