ilr Savage Lander's new book, “The Gems of the East: Sixteen Thousand Miles of Research Travel Among Wild and Tamo Tribes of Enchanting Islands,” with illustrations, diagrams, plans and maps by the author, in two volumes, will be published by Messrs Macmillan next month. Mr Savage Landor returned throe months ago from a journey among cannibals, headhunters, pirates, etc. His new work deals with the extraordinary experiences ho had while travelling in the Sulu and Philippine Archipelagoes—some 1400 islands, all counted—and gives a detailed description of practically un--i known tribes, their customs, manners and superstitions, from an autbropologi. cal, ethnological and geographical point 1 of view. j It does seem to be the case (remarks ' the "Standard”! that athletics are more and more carried on under conditions which favour rowdyism. Great crowds are btought tocether and nay for their seats—and'also bet. They want their run for their money, and they want to win. General Nelson A. Miles is being pereisiently urged to become an open candidate for the Democratic nomination to tho Presidency, or, failing that, to stand read* to accept nomination from the Prohibition party.
