Bracelet Meeting—Juno 15th, 16th, and 17th; and Sapling and Maiden Meeting—August 3rd, 4th, and sth. Leeston O.C.—July 19th. Wairarapa C.O.—August 10th, 11th, and 12th. Oamaru C.C. Maiden and Open Stakes— July 28th and 29th. NOTES. (By “Go-Bye.”l Mr J. H. Payton, of Masterton, has imported from New South Wales a w and f b sapling by General Booth (Happy Gazer —Happy Eliza) from Rodda (Gameboy—Mystery). I did not get a look at, the youngster when it arrived, but I believe it is quite up to expectations. Mr Payton is going in for the game in dead earnest, and will hold a strong hand in next season’s puppy events. He has at present two or three fine saplings by Ilex—Gipsy Girl. He is also the owner of Ilex, * who is the sire of Faugh-a-bal-lagh, the Dunedin AVaterloo Cup winner. In a letter Mr F. Dupre, hen. secretary of the Wairarapa 0. C., says that the club have made arrangements with Mr M. Connelly, the Oamaru slipper, to act in that capacity at their cup meeting. Therefore, both tho judge (Mr J. Mitchell) and tho slipper will be from the southern club. Mr Dupre further states that only two have dropped out of the original entry of 69 for their Cup, and ho fully expects 64 to make the final payment. The Leeston C.C. hold their initial meeting of 1994 on the 17th, but up till the time of writing I have received no results. (Where are you, Mr Pick?’ Hearing that the Akaroa Coursing Club purposed holding a meeting this month, and their dates not appearing at the head of this column, I inquired from Mr Davies, the hon. secretary of the New Zealand Coursing Association, the reason. Mr Davies informed me that the Akaroa C. C. is not affiliated with the N.Z.C.A.. and is the only club standing out. Seeing an advertisement is a southern paper that the Akaroa C. C. intended to hold a coursing meeting, and calling for nominations, Mr Davies immediately communicated with the hon. secretary (Mr Jacobsen) advising the club to affiliate with the N.Z.C.A. It was pointed out to them that should they hold a meeting not sanctioned by the N.Z.C.A., the only course to be taken was that all persons and dogs taking part at the meeting would he disqualified and ineligible to compete in any events run under tho rules of the N.Z.C.A. Although the Akaroa Club was communicated with on May sth, no reply has been received. This is a great pity, but
the only sufferers will bo tho Akaroa Club and their patrons. Great Heart tl.indsay Gordon—Gipsy Queen), who accounted for a great number of slakes in Now South Wales last season, has started this season very well by placing another rich stake to the credit of his owners by annexing the Orange Cup. The value of the Cup to the winner was £75, including £25 added money. Tho stake was for 6-t dogs, but only 48 made the final payment. The finals resulted as follows ;
Orange Cup, for 48, all ages, at £3 3s; winner £75, runner-up £2O, third dog £lO, four dogs at £4 4s each. Messrs Summons and Graham’s ns red d Groat Heart, by Lindsay Gordon — Gipspy Queen, heat Air R. Coorabes’s n s f dp Chronograph, by Booty—Golden Queen, and won the Cup. Orange Purse, for 24 dogs beaten in first round of Cup ; winner £ls, run-ner-up £7, third dog £3 3s.
Air V. Bell’s blk and w d Brilliant Boy, by Lieutenant—The Bride, boat Alessrs Ryan and O’Brien’s blk d Young Alarlow, by Goldsmith—Polonaise, and won the Purse. Orange Plate, lor dogs beaten in first ties of the Cup ; winner £ls, runnerup’£7, third dog £3 3s. Air P. A. Lamb’s blk and w d Le Reynard, by Alagpie—Fancy, beat Alessrs Bramwell and AlcAfee’s f d Bathurst Burr, by Booty—Corinthe, and won tho Plate.
Great Heart was a hot favourite from the start. He was well hacked at sto 2, and before a course was run his price was 6 to 4 against his winning the Cup. Great Heart’s best performances to date are a N.S.AV. Derby, N.S.AV. Challenge Stakes (128 dogs), C.N.E. Champion Cup, Illawara Challenge Stakes, two- Orange Cups, and runnor-up to Kilronan in last year’s Australian AVaterloo Cup. Truly a great list of performances. Commenting on Groat Heart in the Cup, “Ameshury,” of the “Referee,” says:—Starting operation in most slovenly fashion, he gradually worked himself into form equal to his best. It is well known that Great Heart will “make a race of it” with anything good or bad, but nevertheless, had a dog like Milesian met him on the first day I fancy the famous champion would havo gone down. Air Alartin Taylor tells mo that ho has decided to make the trip to Sydney next month for tho N.S.W, Challenge Stakes. Another courser to pay to visit to N.S.AV. tins season is Air J. Amorotti, who will leave after the Wellington coursing meet, ing in June next. Air Taylor intends disposing of his team of dogs at Alastorton by auction. They comprise red d Field Marshall (Wellington—Lavender Water), hrd Grace Hawthorne (Butcher Boy—Lady Dashwood), hrd d Alonarch (Emperor—Trisca Lass), and a hrd b unnamed.
Mlnto (Frisky Lad—Jewel), wanner of the Oamaru Challenge Stakes. 1902, is on a visit to Oliver Goldsmith (Goldsmith—The Witch). Crown Jewel (Maxim—Star Jewel) will visit the brindle son of Goldsmith next month. Our Australian visitors. Air P. P. Kelly, and Mr E. Hepple intend patronising the Alasterton and Wellington coursing meetings before they return home again. I hear that Air Hepple has got a couple of dogs over, and they will be given a run at Masterton and AVellington. Soi far the New Zealand dogs havo more than held their own against the visitors, but X should like to see them get to the end of a stake before they leave Now Zealand.
