AMBITION VERSUS LOVE

Someone has just sa'd that love is “the murderer of ambition," and another questions whether the fruits of ambition aro not tpiito without sweetness if lovo has not been gained. In some cases it has seemed that love has led a man into a lotus land of sweetness. where his dreams of ambition have faded away, but in oth'- cases it is love and love alone that has spurred many a man on to ambitions he would never have thought of; it has roused him from the lethargy into which ho was fast sinking—

In peace. Lovo tunes tho shepherd’s reed; In war ho mounts tho warrior’s steed, love rules tho court, the camp, the grove. And men below and saints above, per Lovo is heaven, and heaven is Love.

Ambitious as she may bo no sooner does love stir tho heart of a woman than she is ready to push all aside for lovo, and tho ambitions of her loved one. Tho world may condemn her, say sho is foolish, point to the laurel crown almost within her roach. Put the woman knows its wortii. Lovo is her divine right; sho cannot put it n s’do. and to her it seems nobler to beautify lives, and to live a full life with lovo singing in her heart, than to give all her time and thoughts to an nmh’tion that is after all but an outside affair.

Though love colours all his life, a man must have work as well as love, and tho happier his leisure moments tho finer and hotter will bo his work.
