Tlio increase in the trade of Shannon is apparent to anyone acquainted with the pJnco, but for tho information or those unacquainted, tho following facts will bo interesting:— A little over twelve months ago a large block of swamp land was purchased by tho Makerua Estato Company, and the development, by Systematic Drainage, Reading, Fencing and Tramways have helped very largely to increase tho population and trade of the district by the employment of a very large amount or labour at very remunerative wages. Now, as nearly everyone.’knows that, the foundation of prosperity of Levin may be ascribed t a the two Sawmills Weroroa, how will Shannon progress with five or six Sawmills:* Tho Makerua Swamp is supplying Plaxmills that contain nine strippers at the present time, which will bo probably increased do another ten strippers within IS months. The. development of tho above-named industries will cans© an expenditure of about .£IOO,OOO per annum, in addition to tho Butter, ‘Wool, Mutton and Beef prodr ced in the district. The Construction of the SHANNON BRIDGE will largely assist.the export of Produce via the Port of Poston, and also imports. There are also proposals to utilise the ■TOKOMARTJ WATER FALLS for the purpose of producing Electric Motive Power for driving the machinery of tho various industries In tho distinct, which would bo a groat incentive to starting other industries. Negotiations aro being mad© to start a Ropo and Binder-Twine Factory, also a Sash and Door Factory, and also a Brick Yard, tho Raw Material for above being all procurable in Shannon. The formation of tho Rive* Board to al with the Flood’Waters of tho Manaitu and Oroua Rivers, which will affect out 75,000 acres of low-lying lands, is rv near consummation (vide “Manawatu ,ening Standard/* Oct. 24th, 1903), and successfully canned out, will be an im--snso boon to the District and Colony.
