The Marlborough Lacing Club’s spring meeting was concluded yesterday. Criminal cases were again before the Supreme Court in Wellington yesterday. The cricket match between the Englishmen and the Queensland eleven commenced yesterday at Brisbane. The annual meeting of the Wellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday. The jn'otracted and sensational trial of a Polish nobleman and his wife'has resulted in the acquittal of the prisoners. Great activity is being -shown in i' Japanese -navy, and arsenals. The situation in regard to Russia, is said to be serious. Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, in addressing a gathering at CUmrgar, said Britain’s influence in the Persian Gulf must remain supreme. The British Parliamentary party visiting Prance was -entertained at a banquet at which iho Prouder of tho Republic made a notable speech. Tho Earl of Halsbury, the Lord High Chancellor, speaking at a meeting in Condon, protested against the shameful abuse and detraction of Mr Chamberlain.
