CRICKET IN AUSTRALIA.

THE ENGLISHMEN AT ADELAIDE. SECOND DAY’S PLAY. (Received November 9, 11.13 p.m.) • ADELAIDE November 9. The cricket match between the Englishmen and South Australia —■ which was commenced on Saturday, the Englishman hatting all day, and scoring 2-17 for three wickets—was continued to-day. The weather wag dull and muggy, while clouds of dust swept over tho ground. Tho visitors have early started, rtcordmakiug, both as regards closing their innings and the length of the same. The score of tho initial innings of their tour ig ’a remarkable performance. Then Rhodes made his debut by taking a wicket with his first ball. Hayward (not out 126) and Bratmd inot out 47) continued batting, and had carried tho score to 260 when Giffen got rid of Braund with a beauty. Hirst, who followed, played lively cricket, especially in pretty leg strokes, and helped to carry tho score on to 322, when in trying to pull oho to log be was nicoly caught. At this stage a shower stopped play for a few minutes, but was not sufficient to damage the ground. Hayward, who was playing carefully and steadilv adding to the score, next had the assistance of Bosanqnet. AVith tlia board showing 336, Hayward's end came through him spooning one from Travers to Hill at mid-off. He was six and a half hours at the wickets. He played a masterly defensive and at times a brilliant innings, with only one blemish —a difficult chance when at 16. The retiring batsman was accorded a great ovation.

Bosanqnet played fluidly, and gave two chances while making his 19. Ho reiired with the total at 367. Relf, who has n fine wrist stroke, and Lilley, who banged the bowlers about, made things lively, bringing the score to 446, when Reif retired, being neatly taken in the slips Arnold kept his end up while Lilley piled on runs. This went on until tho tea adjournment, when AVarner decidtd to declare the innings closed. Numerous changes had been tried in tho bowling, which was decidedly loose towards the close. Tho fielding was good. A feature of th'ei home team’s play was the fine form shown, by Gehrs, who with Hack opened the innings, Arnold and Hirst leading the attack. The former was no-bailed three times during the first throe overs. Rhodes went on at 37, and with his flrst, bnll clean bowled Hack. Lilley got in a smart piece of work in stumping Hill, and a brilliant throw in by AVarnor got rid of Gehrs, who played with great dash.
