MURDEROUS ASSAULT.

SHOCKING OUTRAGE NEAR GORE. A special telegram to * the Christchurch “Press,” elated Gore, November 6, says:—A murderous assail]t was committed at Wondon, about twenty miles from Gore, yesterday. A man named John McAuliffo, a butcher’s assistant at Riversdalc, went to the house of a farmer named William Alexander, to take delivery of some pigs. The pigs wore not ready, and an altercation and scufflo between the two look place. MoAuliffe got into his trap, and was driving away, when Alexander camo up behind, and hit him a tenable blow on tho head with a manuka rail, and then pulled him out of tho trap, and kicked him almost to death, breaking three ribs, and inflicting other internal injuries. Ho threatened to corao back and finish him off. McAuliffo crawled across tho road and hid in some scrub, being found in the evening by some neighbours. Tho injured man is not expected to livo, and his depositions havo been taken. Alexander fled from lira home, and was arrested back in the lulls by tho constables from Goro and Waikaia. The condition of McAuliffo, on whoso body there is scarcely an inch uninjured, remains unchanged. The occurrence appears to bo the outooino of a long-standing feud between tho two men, who are both of excitable and quarrelsome dispositions. The extent of McAuliffo’s internal injuries cannot be ascertained, but his body is a mass of largo bruises, and his head and face are battered and cut out of all recognition.
