The holiday was marred in most parts of (he colony yesterday by rain. The Baptist Union Conference continued its sittings yesterday in Wellington. Viscount Goschen has delivered a speech on tho question of preferential trade. Tho cricket match between the Englishmen and South Australia was advanced a stage yesterday. It is stated that Lord Curzou will he appointed for an additional term to tho post of Viceroy of India. There are said to he many Australians stranded in South Africa anxious to return to th o Commonwealth. Tho Russian Viceroy intends to stop Chinese, except workers for railways, entering Manchuria and Eastern Siberia. Races were held yesterday at Christchurch Auckland and Ciarevillo (W airarapa)*. Tho Canterbury Derby uao won lay- Roseal.
