Wright, wiio Ls retiring from the? position of Town Clerk of Dannevirkc. was the recipient of a presentation from tho Borough Council on Thursday night. Mr 11. C. Cameron, Government Produco Commissioner, intends leaving on Monday to catch tho San Francisco mail steamer at Auckland, proceeding thence via. the United States to London.
-Mr J. W. Hill, of tho Tourist Department, who lias been relieving at Auckland, returned to Wellington on Thursday evening. Ho made the return journey overland via Rotorua, Taupe and tho Wanganui river. Mr F. A. Cullen, of the Lands and Survey Department, has been temporarily appointed to act as receiver of lain! revenue at New Plymouth, pending tho appointment, of a successor to tho lato Mr Doilo. Mr Cullen formerly transacted tho duties whilst Mr Doilo was absent on sick leave.
Signor Dragato, Government Viticulturist, is again in Wellington, having returned from a visit of inspection to tho Government vinAry at To Mata (Hawke’s Bay). Ho also visited several orchards and vineries iu tho Hawke’s Bay and Mastcrton districts. He loaves for Auckland to-day.
His Excellency tho Governor, Lady Constance Knox and Lord Northland left for Christchurch by tho Mararoa last night. Lord Ranfurly will open tho new grandstand to-day the Christchurch rape meeting. His Exoelloncy will return from tho south tomorrow morning.
Ouci of the most successful farmers in Canterbury, Mr James .Johns, of Belfast, died last week. Ho was well known throughout the colony as a stockbreeder, his Shropshire and Southdown sheep, shorthorn cattle, and horses haying carried off many prizes in the showrings.
The new headmaster of Christ’s College, Christchurch, the Rev 0. H. Moreland. M.A., has had thirteen years’ experience as a master in an English public school (King Edward VI. Grammai School. Norwich), where he now holds tho position of senior classical and history master. Ho is expected to arnvo in Christchurch about February next. Miss Campbell, an accomplished pianist and organist, who is leaving South Canterbury to take up ber residence in ’Wellington, was entertained at Kingsdown, near Timaru, on Wednesday evening, and presented with a purse of sovereigns by the residents, a pioco of plate from tho united choirs of tho Anglican and Wesleyan churches.
Air Porrctt, tho Auckland artist now on a visit to Wellington, intends going nortii again on Monday morning. Today will, therefore, bo tho last day on which hi.s pictures will be ,on view at tho gallery of Messrs McGregor Wright and Co., Lamb ton quay. Many persons havo already inspected thnso works of art, and havo expressed warm appreciation of their merits. Mr T. A. Attwood, of tho Public Works Department, left for Auckland by yesterday morning’s express. Ho is to bo married to Miss Stone, daughter of Air T. D. Stone, of ” Stoneleigh,” Alount Eden. Auckland, on Tuesday next. Air Attwood was formerly an officer in the Now Zealand Shipping Company, and was subsequently on the Government steamer Hinomoa.
Mr A. E. Whyte, of tho Wellington office of Messrs Barr, Leary and Co., has bean appointed secretary of the Wellington Racing Club, in succession to Mr J. P. Clark, who resigned. Mr Whyte commences his duties from December Ist. He was at one time an accountant in tho Colonial Bank in the South Island, and later was attached to tho stall of the Bank of New Zealand.
Mr Robert English, the now engineer engaged in England for the Christchurch Gas Company, was for more than two years chief chemist at tho Crystal Palace Gas Company’s works, superintending in that capacity all tho experiments made to test the value of Professor Lewes’s method of passing water through coal gas retorts. Ho has made a special study of the methods cf purification of gas and the manufacture of carburetted water-gas. Tho following visitors to Wellington wore recent callers at tho Tourist Department:—o.
