POLICE COURT.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, • (Before Dr A. (McArthur, S.M.) Six first offending inebriates wen dealt with. , Janies Payne, twice pro. viously convicted, was fined 40s, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. Two lads, William Gordon, thirteen, and Bert Moore, nine, pleaded guilty to tho theft of £2 18s 9d in money from tho dwelling of George Atkinson. Mr Atkinson, who appeared for Moire, said that lie had already been punished by his parents up to the limit allowed by a medica,! man. Restitution would be made. Gordon’s brother explained that accused lived with him and an elder sister, being fatherless and motherless. The lad went to school regularly. Noth, ing had previously been known against him. In answer to a question by tha Magistrate, Sub-Inspector (TDonovair said Mooro had developed a tendency towards theft. He visited tho houso ol Mr Atkinson in the morning, and find, ing nobody about returned in tho afternoon in company with tho other accused, and effected an entrance through an open window. Gordon, ho said, had really incited Mooro to commit tho theft. Gordon was convicted and discharged. Mooro was exonerated from blame, and let off with a caution. Both tho accused were ordered to make restitution of half tho amount stolen.

Gt-orgo liebbyd, who was defended by Mr Weston, was ordered to pay 7s 6d per week towards the maintenance of his illegitimate child, and £5 expenses. Eoso Elizabeth Litt,!o applied unsuocessfully to have her husband, August' Ernest Little, ordered to contribute a weekly sum towards the support of herself and three children. Defendant said ho was doing his best for his family. Ho also alleged that he had given plaintiff money to pay certain outstanding debts but she bad failed to do 60. The case was dismissed.
