Tho “ Cologne Gazette ” denies a rumour which is current that the German Government will use its influence to prevent Cardinal Rampolla’s election to tho Papacy. It states that the Government is firmly resolved not to endeavour to influence the Cardinals, either in opposing or in promoting any candidature. THE LATE POPE LEO. IToME. July 28. Tho Roman newspapers complain of Dr Lapponi’s embalmment of the late Pope. SYDNEY, July 29. Solemn Requiem Masses for the late Pope wero celebrated throughout the Commonwealth yesterday, except in Sydney, where services will ho held on Thursday. NELSON, July 29. Two Requiem Masses for the late Pope wero celebrated at St. Mary’s this morning, tho celebrant being Father George Mahony. There wero largo attendances of persons of all denominations. Tho church was draped in b’aok, with appropriate texts, and tho choir and convent children intoned tho services. Tho Do Profundis was sung. Father Mahon-v delivered a "panegyric on the late Pontiff. At St. Joseph’s (Buckle street) a Requiem Mass for the late Pope was celebrated yesterday morning. Tho Very Rev Father Smyth (of Hastings) sang the Mass, while the Rev Father Devoy officiated as deacon. The Rev Father Hymens (of Palmerston North) was subtleaoon, and the Rev Father O’Shea master of ceremonies. The priests in ibe sanctuary were the Very Rev Father Binsfield, tho Very Rov Father Lewis, the Very Rev Father McNamara, the Rev Father Cahill, and tho Very Rov Father Walshe. The Rev Father Dehdeh, the Syrian priest resident in Wellington was also in the sanctuary. The church had been draped by the priests of the church, asristod by the Altar Society. The choir - sang appropriate Gregorian chants, the “Dies Xrae" being especially effective. In addition to the ordinary choristers, the Rev Fathers Ainsworth, Holley. Power (of Hawera), Kimbell and Maloney took part in the musical portion of the service, Mr Kenny presiding at the organ. The Mass will 'to repeated at Father Ainsworth’s Church, Newtown, this morning, at 9.30 o’clock.
