THE NAVAL AGREEMENT.
ADOPTION OF THE BELL IN AUSTRALIA. - (Received. July 33, 0.59 a.m.) MELBOURNE, July 22.In the federal House of Representatives, the amendment by Mr Watson, leader of tho Labour party, to the Naval Agreement Bill, that tho Bill, bo read a second tini-o err months hence, was negatived by 40 votes to 22. Tho second reading was then carried by 38 to 14. Hie Bill is now being considered in committee. The annual cost of the now squadron will bo about £2,000,000. as against £850,000 for tho old. It will consist of a first-class cruiser of 12,000 tons, with a speed of 21 knots and a complement of 755 men; two second-class cruisers of tho modem typo of 5880 tons, with a speed of 1,2 to 2l knots; also, four third-class cruisers, which are already in Australian waters and one of tho Amethyst typo. These vessels have bases in the ports of Australia and Now Zealand. The cost of the new agreement to tho Commonwealth will bo Is Okl per head, as against 8d under tho old agreement.
