SATUEDAY, JULY 4. (Before Dr A. McArthur, S.M.) Four first-offenders, charged with drunkenness, wore convicted. A sailor, similarly charged, was handed over to tho naval authorities to ho dealt'.with. Annie Smith was fined 40s. in default ono month’s imprisonment, for having importuned in Grhuznee street. Thu hearing of a similar charge against Mary Anderson, was adjourned. Bail was granted. Thomas Cano and Bartholomew Mahoney both pleaded guilty to having behaved in a disorderly manner, wiiereby a breach of the xieace was occasioned in Mannore street on Friday night. A fine of 20s, in default seven days’ imprisonment, was inijicsed in each case. John Eenton, an old ago pensioner, was charged with having been found by night without lawful excuse m an unoccupied house belonging to tho City Council. Sub-Inspector O’Donovan said tho defendant had been in the habit recently of wandering about the town and sleeping in outhouses. The police suggested that the case bo adjourned for a week to seo if arrangements could not bo made to get the defendant in a homo. Tho ■ adjournment was granted. Henry Hargreaves, a middle-aged man, was charged with having stolen a portmanteau and contents and a waterproof coat, valued at C 3, tho property of August Foizgi, at Ifaiwarra. The hearing of tho case was adjourned. John Cooper pleaded not guilty to> having failed to provide for tho maintenance of his illegitimate child, alleged to have been born-in 18t)7. •Mr Jellicoe appeared for- the defendant and. Mr Brown for the complainant. Tho defendant was called by Mr Brown to give evidence. An objection was raised to this course being'adopted at tho preliminary hearing of the case a week ago. His Worship, however, ruled that tho complainant had a right to call the defendant. After evidence had been hoard, his Worship said he would give his decision on Friday.
