WELLINGTON POULTRY SOCIETY.
ANNUAL DINNER The dinner of the Wellington* fa-re-ctors, which hag now come to be looked upon as part and parcel of the animat show, was hold in tho Century Hall last evening. About savoury guests attended, Mr Georgo Finn (pro.-ident of tho society), who presided, was supported on his right; by Mr D. D. Hydo, and on the loft by Mr A. W. Walker. Amongst those present wore Messrs It. E, Bajxniwtcr, C. Canning (Hawke’s Bay), J. Walker (Auckland), J, H. Priestly, R J. Goodwin (secretory of tha Feilding Poultry Society), Geo. Frost J. Jarvis (Hongotea), as well as several of the promi, nent winners at the show. ‘ Mr R E. Bannister, in proposing tho toast of “ Exhibitors," paid a tribute to tho quality of tho birds exhibited at tho show, and gave the committee some valuable hints for its future guidance. Messrs C. Canning, A. Walker, J. H. Priestly and J. AValker suitably responded. The toast of "The Judges” was rol plied to by Messrs J. Casey, George Remington, T. Doig, W. H. Smith and J. Cooper. The toast of "The Visitors’’ was honoured with enthusiasm. Mr Bannister, in giving "The Ponltayi Industry," referred to the remarkable strides made in the export of poultry of late years, and tho fact that there were thousands of people in New Zealand at present making a Bring by poultrybreeding 4 The Government Poultry Expert, Mr H D* Hyde, responded. Ho ompbasisetf the necessity of fanciers taking an interest in tho export trade. As an industry tho export of poultry had a big future before it,_ and if any evidence as to tho quality of New Zealand fowl waa wanted one had only to refer to the commendations of the merchants in South Africa, who unhesitatingly pronounced it to be far and away the best offered for sale there. Reverting to things locally, he expressed his pleasure at seeing Mr B. E. Bannister, the veteran fancier of Wellington, present. Mr Hyde,'at tho close of his speech, said it would be a wise thing to include a class for breeding purposes in the show catalogue in future, and announced, amidst applause, that he would present the society with a trophy for such a section. Mr A. Walker proposed tho "Wellington Poultry Society” in an appropriate speech, in which he complimented l the secretary (Mr Dovey) on the obliging and painstaking manner in which he had carried ,ont his arduous duties. The toast was acknowledged by the president (Mr G. Finn) and Mr Dovey (secretary). Mr Finn said that the society had’ experienced an up-hill fight, but after tho present show they expected a surplus. (Applause.) The committee had several necessary improvements to make before next show, and ho confidently expected next year’s exhibition to be an advance in point of quality and numbers. The singing ‘of "Auld Lang " Svuo” brought a pleasant evening to a close.
