POULTRY SHOW.

TWENTY-FIRST.' 'ANNUAL , UXilimiON. Tiio Wellington Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society opened ite twenty-first annual exhibition at the Skating llink yesterday under favourable auspices. Although the entries show a falling off of slightly over 100, when compared with last yeaf’hk total the exhibits aro not behind-hand in quality, and when it la explained that 120 late entries wore refused, in accordance with the regulations, it will be seen the discrepancy is not attributable to a disinclination on the part of fanciers to como forward with their bird*. Indeed, ono of tho judges unhesitatingly declared that tho show included some of tho finest birds over entered for public competition in Wellington. It must also bo gratifying to tho society that tho show is in every way proving a financial success. Punctually at_ 2.30 p.m. the Mayor CMr J. O. W. Aitkon) declared the exhibition open, and thereafter a steady stream of people kept wending their way in to examine tho birds. The judges wore Poultry J. Casey, G. Remington and A. Doig; pigeons, VV. H. \ Smith (Sydney); canaries, P. Cooper. A feature of the show was the number of exhibitors who sent birds from a distance. Amongst those “outsiders’! who obtained distinction with their exhibits were—A. W. Broadway, Otaki; T. Breeze, Ashburton; D. Craig, Christa church; J. P. Calvert, Christchurch: W. Cotton,Palmerston North; B. Cooke, Blenheim ; F. Duckor, Martinboimigh ; A. Ellingham, Hustings; J, W. Green, Christchurch ; George Hodson,Blenheim ; G. F. A. Hardy, Christchurch; H. B. Mills, Hawera; H. W. Oppert, Hastings ; J. H. Priestly, Auckland; W. A. Bowman, Blenheim; A. Tyree, Christchurch ; Tonar Bros., Auckland; John Walker, Mount Albert, Auckland; S. Y. Wearing, Nolson; and Others who exhibited a lesser number of birds. Speaking'jof the individual exhibits, the Workings,' cannot be described as a particularly strong class. Tho hens were a medium lot, arid only ono silver pullet was shown. Cochins fell away badly in numbers’*compared with last year, the only bird specially deserving of mention being tho winning cock. Dark Brahmas were conspicuous by their absence. The light specimens, however, were really fine birds, the winning cock, to use the judges’ own words, being “a beauty.” Some white Brahmas wore wrongly entered in tho class, and had to be disqualified. Tho Brahma hens were also quite equal to the cocks in point of quality. Two fine cocks were exhibited iu the Minorca section, b?it the cockerels, With tho exception of the placed exhibit, wore a poor class, their chief drawback being lack of size. Leghorns were very numerously exhibited, but the'general quality of tho birds was not above the average. Tho first prizetaker iu the class for white cocks won easily. The white hens were a medium lot, and the cockerels wore only (satisfactory. The brown Leghorns, as usual, were' largely represented, and some good birds were put before the judges. The premier cock and cockerel' were about the pick of the class. Both birds were well feathered and in line condition. The Hamburgs were_ a strong lot, and the same remark applies to the bantams. The bantam Japanese cock, exhibited by Major Smith, was the best the judge has handled. Some fine Pekin ducks came under the eye of the judges; but the entire absence of Ailesburys wiis to be regretted. Plymouth Bocks wore ahead of anything that has been exhibited for some years. The black Orpingtons were a rather weak exhibit, but 'a much bettor class was pub forward in the buff section. The prize Langsban cock is a bird of fine proportions and colour, and tho cockerel, too, is of good quality. The show of canaries was a meet creditable one. One bird owned by Clarence Arthur, . of Willis street, which carriod off the tenguinea trophy, is a beautiful orangebuff, perfectly coloured. Like the canaries,! the pigeons ,were,a fine lot, and many of the exhibits would win in any show in tho colony. The Fresh Food and loe Company exhibited a number of dressed fowls at the show. A word of praise is due to tho committee, especially 'the secretary, Mr Hovey for the businesslike manner m which’ the arrangements were carried out.
