• t WAIRARAPA. Special to tub “ Times.” CARTERTON. Tuesday. J Thu annual meeting of the Wa ; rarapa ■ Licensing Committee was held here this afternoon. Present —Mr U . P. James, ;S.AI., and Messrs N. Grace, Adam Donlaid, J. Stevens, li. Bright and G. \V. i Idelior. There was also in attendance (ho largest number of hotel-keepers, police constables and members of the | Par ever seen together aa one time in ■ Carterton. In every ca.se ior applicaj tion, wJth tho exception of Kavauagh’s I Hotel, Martinborough, Eagle’s Taueru .Hotel, and Warburtous Bla.rlogio Junction’Hotel, the police reports were favourable. j Respecting KavanaglTs Hotel, tho i police reported that it was conducted !in an unsatisfactory manner. For the ! applicant, Mr J. A’. Card contended i that as no notice to tills elieci had I been served either upon himself or up]on Mr Kavanagli, the* committee had | no option but to grant the application. | His Worship agreed, remarking that no doubt tho applicant would take notice of tho police report. Tho police reported that there wore certain renovations required to be per- | formed on the Blairlogio Hotel and its j outhouses, and that the Taueru Hotel ■ required renovating considerably. It ; was admitted that this .house was wellI I conducted and clean, but the building j itself was old. Constable Egan stated 1 that the house was almost beyond rc--1 pair, although bonstructed of totara. Tho roof leaked badly, and the piles were almost gone. There was sufficient accommodation, and it was .possible that with certain renovations tho house would bo all right. • AV. Eagle, the licensee, stated that ho had not communicated with the owners of the property with reference to tho police report. Thought it would cost £llOO to erect a new building. Had seven years’ lease to run. The rent was ,14 per week. • Tho owners of the promises were Messrs Dwan and Young. Tho committee retired to consider the matter, and eventually decided to grant tho license on the condition that the bouse was rebuilt', or tlie- licensee wa.s making preparations to rebuild, by tho next annual meeting. Tho application for a renewal of a license to the lilairlogie Hotel was granted, subject to the required alterations being effected. AH other applications were granted ■unconditionally. All licenses were for 10 p.ra. muss ASSOCIATION. INVERCARGILL, June 2. Tho Awarua Licensing Committee- reduced the number of hotels by 25 per cent. Tho licenses refused were those of Fordo’s, at AVaikiwi ; FotheringImm’s, Woodlands; Chnllis’s, One Tree Point; and Smart, Gap road. The- hour for closing was fixed a.t 10 o’clock. AUCKLAND. June 2. ■At t-lio animal mooting of the City Licensing Committee the police reports stated that a-H the hotels were fairly well conducted. Two members of the committee objected to no discrimination in tho report in respect of the better .class of hotels. All applications but five were granted. There are- police objections to these, and they will bo considered cm Tuesday. (From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON. Juno 2. I regret that in my report of the Licensing Pouch proceedings yesterday tho name of the Occidental Hotel was inadvertently substituted for that of the Clarendon, when referring to the houses tho granting of whose licenses wore adjourned. The license for tho .Occidental- Hotel was granted without tho slightest demur, the police report upon that house being of a. complimentary nature, as the house has always had tho reputation of being one of tho best-conducted in tho town.
