THE BACHELOR REDIVIVUS
At last there are hopeful indications that tho bachelor is waking up. For some years ho has practically lain dormant, and the match makers have found him most difficult to manage. Time was when he was most tractable and comparatively easy to *'stalk.’’ Instead of figuring shy of the matrimonial nets spread forth in his sight, he used to actually seek them out. Wo can r&mcmber halcyon days when eligible bachelors gave balls and organised other delightful entertainments, and when there was practically little or no difficulty in bringing them to dances and private theatricals and other wehs_ specially woven by mothers and chaperones to- snare the masculine fly. Since then, however, a sad change has come over the social world, so far as the bachelor is concerned. He has refused to dance, however sweetly' he has been piped unto; Ire has given up entertaining, and even made it a positive favour to be entertained by others. But, happily, the pendulum is swinging once more in thS other direction. Has ho tired of riding what oar grandmothers called "the high horse”? Or, has he grown alarmed at the indifference with which tho modern maiden now regards matrimony? Whatever may (be the•-reason for the change, the fact clearly remains that it has been brought about. Society' is rejoicing over the decided disposition of its young men to dance; most of its most recent bridegrooms have been young; and now, at their own initiative, the bachelors are again taking to organising most charming parties of their own. and there are rumours afloat that the coming season is to be one of groat gaiety in this direc. tion. Men are always excellent hosts 1 and when they avowedly- a£t themselves out to please in this capacity they never fail, so that if all present promises are fulfilled, the entertainments of the coming season should be gayer than they have been for years.’ and certainly fraught with greater matrimonial possibilities.
