PALMERSTON NORTH.
(By Our Special Reporter.) Friday. The Palmerston Licensing Committee will hold its annual meeting on Monday. A special report upon the condition of tho hotels has been made by the police. As a result three of them are condemned, tho buildings being old and badly situated; a fourth received a qualified condemnation, while as to the rest, the reports are favourable. „ . , Bishop Nevill, Acting Primate, preached to a large congrogation.at All Saints Church this evening.. , , „ „ ~ Tho heavy rain which has fallen. ;or the past two days has flooded a good deal of tho low-lying lands, and has considerably retarded farming operations hut no great damage has been reported. It is reported that scarlet fever is somewhat prevalent,in Palmerston at present, but as'the Borough Council is talcing every precaution no serious outbreak is anticipated. The new Borough Council met for the transaction of business for. the first time to-night, tho necessary validating Order-in-Council having arrived. The accumulated business, however was so great that another sitting will be necessary next Tuesday.
