MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY G. (Before Dr A. McArthur, S.M.) One first-offending inebriate was convicted. Arthur Scott was fined 10s, in default seven days’ imprisonment. Joseph Molloy appeared on remand for sontonco’for having stolen a musical box valued at £6, tho property cf Emily Cairns. His Worship imposed a sentence of one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. Tho throe charges against Thomas Prisko, alleged to have brought into New Zealand opium, tho importation of which is restricted, were again called. Mr Bell asked that the eases bo adjourned siuo die, to bo called on again on twenty-four hours’ notice. Mr Jelliooo, who appeared for-the defendant, consented to tho adjournment. James McMillan, a young man, denied being an idlo and a disorderly person having insufficient visible lawful means of . support. On tho defendant’s own application tho hearing of the ease was adjourned until tho 9th inst. The hearing cf the charge against. John Lennox, of having obtained tho sum of £4 7s from Alexander Wilson by moans of false pretences, with a valueless cheque, was adjourned until the 13tli inst. Bail was allowed. . Albert Edward Hunt, a young man, was charged with having stolen a portmanteau containing articles of clothing valued at £4 10s, tho property of Alex. Crabb, at Wellington, on 23rd November. Sub-Inspector o’Donova.n asked that the case be adjourned until 13th inst., as a person concerned in tho same case bad beonj remanded until that date. Hunt pleaded guilty to a further charge of having deserted his wife and two children at Brooklyn on tho 13th January. This caso was also adjorned until 13th inst. .Francis Philpotts Bmford, a nyddleaged man, was convicted and ordered to como up for sentence when called upon, for having stolc-u a gold chain and trinkets valued at 355, the property of Frances Amelia Bell. Mary Laming., about eleven years of ago, was committed to tho industrial school for having stolon a xmrso containing a brooch valued at 7s Gd, and nine pence in money, tho property of Annio Anderson. The defendant. took tho articles whilst tho informant was bathing at tho To Aro baths. Tho defendant had previously stolen articles, and had been cautioned by the police. Violet Ward, a child found residing ■with reputed habitual drunkards, was committed to St. Joseph's Industrial School.
