PIRACY IN THE RED SEA
A fresh brush with pirates has occurred iu the Red Sea, a British boat being fired on. A dhow, manned by a detachment, of men from H.M. gunboat Speedy and a few natives, which was employed on police, duty, encountered m the open sea olf Hodeida a. pirate Doat, and went in pursuit. The pirates fired on tiro dhow and killed a. native. The dhow replied, hut with what result is not known. The pirates wore able to escape to a place called Khorol Wahla, consisting of a group of four villages situated on tho Yemen coast, not fnr from Hodeida. The British Embassy. has called the Porto’s attention to the matter, and expressed a wish for tho friendly co-operation of the Turkish authorities' in tho suppression of piracy, which wa.s also in tho interest of Turkov. Tho Porto recognised the friendly intentions of Britain, and sent two com. panics of soldiers with a Commissioner to tho spot, in order to ‘arrest tho pirates, who wi'l bo taken to Hodeida for trial. Meanwhile H.M. gunboat Speedy is remaining in Hie neighbourhood to observe tho measures taken by the local authorities.
