PALMERSTON NORTH.

(By Our Special Reporter.) Thursday. Mr Crichton, the successful architect for the Opera House, was in Palmerston, to-day, and after conferring with tho sub-committee of the Borough Council, returned to Wellington for the purpose of preparing working plans on the lines of his accepted design. The train from the Wairarapa was an hour late in arriving this afternoon, on account of a breakdown at tho Rimutaka. Mr A. Matheson, who went from Palmerston a few months ago to South Africa, to pursue his profession of a school-teacher, has been appointed headmaster of tho Standorton School, in Ratal, and his brother Roy, who accompanied him, has been placed in! charge of the Heidleburg School. An athletic sports meeting will bo held at Awahuri on St. Patrick’s Day. Mr W. A. Orchard left Palmerston this afternoon, on route for Sydney. He was farewellcd at the railway station by a largo number of friends. Tho movement to form another brass baud in Palmerston is progressing apace and subscription lists are now out to secure funds for the purchase of instruments. Palmerston North’s subscription towards the Elingamite fund amounts, to £l2 16s. ' • The annual meeting of the Poultry Association did .not take place this evening owing to the absence of a proper balance-sheet. A' committee meeting was held, at which Messrs Morris, Manson, Cuming, Reeling, Bowler and Manttan were appointed delegates to confer with the Agricultural and Pastoral Association regarding the winter show.
