The Newtown licensing poll inquiry was advanced a stage yesterday. Ram fairs wore held yesterday at Palmerston North and Christchurch. Eighteen thousand cases of influenza are reported in Basle, Switzerland. Sanguinary conflicts have taken place between Turkish troops and Bulgarians. Mr Chamberlain was enthusiastically welcomed on arriving at Bloemfontein. A number of awards of the Arbitration Court have been announced at Auckland. The North Island Brass Bands’ Association contests were continued yesterday at Masterton. Mr Chamberlain has recommended the munioipalisation of the drink traffic at Johannesburg. The King is reported to be rapidly recovering from his illness, and early convalescence is anticipated. The Rand Mining Companies are negotiating for the .introduction of twentyfive thousand Japanese labourers.The case of Langstone and Stuart, charged with conspiracy, was before the Supremo Court yesterday in ,'Wellington. A statistical table, compiled by the Kaiser, comparing the German and British navies, has been submitted to the Reichstag. A deputation from the Duke of Sutherland’s Association is to wait upon the British Government regarding food supply in war time. Mr Chamberlain was presented at Bloemfontein -with an address from all classes of Boers—those who surrendered, the National Scouts, and those who fought to the end.
