ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
T. Gonnings.—The iron steamer Princess Alice. (251 tons) was sunk by collision with the Bywell Castle (1376 tons), at 7.40 p.m. on Tuesday, the 7th September, 1878, in the Thames, at Gallion's Beach, about a mile below Woolwich. About 640 bodies were recovered. The saved numbered 200, but of those 16 died afterwards. There were, it is supposed, above 900 persons on board. Cannot find reference to a cable ship Atalanta, but the Eastern Telegraph Company's steamer Volta was wrecked on Monach’i Bocks, Corsica, on the 18th April, 1887, 12 lives being lost. There was a warship Atalante lost on the 10th November, 1813, off Nova Scotia.
