The Hon. J. Carroll has returned to Wellington from Gisborne. The Premier Avill probably leave for Auckland at the end of next week. Mr A. E. Harding, M.11.R. for Kaipara, lias loft on a visit to Australia. There Avas a slight improvement last evening in the Hon Dr Grace’s condition. Major Hayhurst, of Temuka, loaves for England to-day by tlie Ruapehu, accompanied by Mrs Hayhurst and family. Mrs Edwin Dorset, an old resident of the Wairarapa, is in a state of health Avhich is causing grave anxiety to her friends. Mr W. H. Cook, late of Mastertm and Potonc, has been appointed road overseer to the Wairarapa South County Council. Mr Joseph Taylor, master blacksmith, an old resident of Blenheim, Avhero he was a prominent Mason, died there suddenly yesterday. MrJ. Strauchon, Chief Surveyor and Commissioner of Crown Lands, left for Palmerston North yesterday, on departmental duties. Mr Soddon has consented, in response to an invitation, to open the inaugural, exhibition of tho Feilding Industrial Association next month. Recent visitors to the Tourist Department include tho following :—Miss P. Naphtali. Dunedin; Miss Combes, New South Wales: Miss 13. Ford, Sydney; W. ,F. and L. G. Marks, Nowra, Now South Wales. Tho Government has appointed Mr J. Graham Govv as one of the commercial agents for tho purpose of opening up markets for Ncav Zealand products. Mr Goav lias just returned from a tour of tho Avorld in' the capacity of Trade Commissioner. Ho will go to South. Africa for tho purpose of furthering trade between that country and New Zealand.

Representatives of leading- fire and marine insurance companies arc at present in Wellington to attend a conference on matters affecting the UndcrAvriters’ Association. Among the visitors are:—Messrs Henry G. Williams (National Fire and Marine Company), Thomas B- Fisher (Standard Company), James Edgar (Victoria Company), James Kirker (South British Company, and F. H. Pickering (Imperial Company).

Dr Fenwick, a new arrival in Wanganui (says our correspondent) was yesterday appointed by the Hospital Board a visiting surgeon to tho institution. Ho occupied a similar position at tho Christchurch Hospital, and resigned to servo in South Africa. There he was appointed surgeon to the military hospitals at Pretoria and East London, and on returning to the colony was appointed to the charge of tho plague and military hospital at Christchurch.

Mr 11. Field, Avho has been up till recently a member of the Conciliation Board, has been appointed permanent secretary to the Employers’ Association. It will be part of Mr Field’s duty to prepare and present cases before the Conciliation Board and Arbitration Court, and the whole of bis time will bo devoted to the work of the association. Mr P. Levi, who has hitherto acted as secretary to the Employers’ Association, will continue to serve the association as its solicitor.

Mr W. A. Orchard, v.dio leaves Palmerston for Sydney to-day, was last night presented with a handsome piece of silver plate l>y the members of the Operatic Society (says our Palmerston North correspomlf'iit) in recognition oi his services as conductor, lie 1 presentation was made hy Mr 11. Palmer president of the society, who referred in eulogistic terms to Mr Orchard's '/•- paid lilies as a musician, and wished Idm every success in his new sphere as conductor of t he Sydney Liedertnfel. Sir John Hail, who is at present in Welling! on en route for Kiigmiid, visited the Parliamentary Puddings yesterday, and was shown over the library by the Child .Librarian (Mr C.
