MELROSE BOROUGH COUNCIL
Tlio fortnightly moating of tho Melrose Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor presided, and Councillors Jorgensen, Crawford, Heginbotham, Jacobsen, Reid, Brown, Jennings, J?ullford and Nicol were present.
Tho Harbour Board wrote declining to consent to the proposed widening of the Seatonn and Evans Bay roads by 12ft. They considered it desirable to have the proposed widenings of Childers terrace on those roads made to the full width of a chain in one operation. The plans would be forwarded to tbe Marine Department, but the work should be executed as a whole. The Town Clerk explained that nothing could bo dono until they got at* Order-in-Counci!. The report of the Streets Committee was adopted in the following slightly amended form; —“That the offer'of Mr* T. Highot to transfer certain land to tho Council for widening the orescent at Rosencath has been accepted. Having inspected the drawings hud specification deposited by tho Upland Estate Company for new street works at Kelburne, your committee has instructed tho engineer to make an inspection of tho ground, and will ho prepared to report further at the next meeting of tho Council. - '’ Tho Borough Engineer reported progress in various improvement works in different parts of tho borough. He stated: —“With regard to tho application of Mr L. J. Carmine, I understand that a roadway about 10ft wide is required, some thirteen chains in length. Tho road would also require fencing to make it safe. I have not yet had sufficient time to make a survey of the proposed road, but comparing this witli a similar terrace proposed to bo made in Vogeltown, I estimate the cost of the undertaking at £Bl. My estimate of the cost of widening Washington avenue, Brooklyn, north of Cleveland street, and forming and gravelling footpaths on caeli side of the street, where practicable, is £00.” Councillor Fullford moved, with reference to Mr .Carmichael’s application, that a letter be written to those having frontages on the road, 1 that the Council would carry out the work provided they paid one-third of the cost. The proposal was seconded by Councillor Crawford, but was lost on a division by a majority of six votes to four. After some discussion an amendment was carried that the question of widening Washington avenue,' Brooklyn, should be allowed to stand over. The Mayor reported the result of the interview nf the deputation that waited upon the Premier with reference to obtaining a grant in aid of tho proposed Coronation libraries in the borough. Tho proceedings wore published at tho time.
Accounts amounting to £275 7s 10d were passed for payment.
