Archbishop Redwood lefb for Nelson last evening by the Penguin. The Hot W. C. Waters returns by the Eotomahana to-day from Lyttelton. Mr R. D. D. McLean, of Napier, and formerly _ M.H.R. for that seat, is at present in town. Major and Mrs Hayhmst, of Temuka, will arrive in Wellington from the South to-day by the Rotomahana. Mr John Muir, J.P., of Waver ley, is on a visit to town, and is staying at the Empire Hotel. Ho is accompanied: bv Mr a Muir. • Sir John Hall is a passenger from Christchurch by the Rotomahana, arriving hero to-day. Sir John is oa bis way to England. Mr J. C. Blackmon-, Government Pomologist for tho South Island, arrived in Wellington yesterday, and left Intof for Nelson. At St. John’s Church, Wanganui, yesterday (says our correspondent), Mr A. W. Watts, tho well-known athlete, of Feilding, was married to Miss M. A. Hunter, of Rumara. Mr and lE’s G. W. Shirtcliife. who have been spending several weeks iu the Rotorua district, have returned to Wellington. They speak very highly of tho work dono hy tho Tourist Department throughout tho district. Among tho visitors to Wellington at present are—Tho Hon. W. O. Smith, M.L.C.; Mr Hislop (architect), Dunedin ; Dr Graham, Palmerston North; Mr and Mrs St. Lawrence, Jersey, Channel Islands. They are all staying at the Empire Hotel. Mr E. Dobson, of Christchurch, Eas tendered Ins resignation from the New Zealand Surveyors’ Institute. The institute, in accepting tho resignation yesterday, did so with regret, as Mr Dobson has long boon looked upon as a pillar of tho institute. Dean Hovoll, of Napier, is to take a six months’ holiday, commencing in March. Tho Dean will probably make a trip to England. It is understood that tho Rot Mr Lambert, 8.A., formerly of Nelson, will have charge of St. Jolm’s parish during Dean Hovell’s absence, A Press Association message from Now Plymouth states that Mr Seddon has accepted an invitation to attend a Liberal demonstration thero on the 13th inst. Tho gathering is to ho held in honour of tho return of four Liberal mouthers in tho Taranaki district at the lato elections. Mr Arundel Orchard leaves Palmerston to-morrow, en route for Sydney, where he assumes the conduotorshlp of tho Liedertafol. Prior to his departure, tho residents of Palmerston with whom Mr Orchard has boon connected in musical matters intend to show him somo mark of their appreciation and friendship. Bishop Straohan, who recently retired from tho See of Rangoon, India, is a doctor of medicine and of divinity. Amongst others who possess degrees qualifying them to practise as well as to preach may be mentioned Bishops Smyth, of Lobombo, and Hxne‘, of Likoma, in Africa, both of whom aro doctors of medicine. .

A Press Asscciat lan message from Invercargill says:—Mr Hogarth, of the Admiralty Stores Department, Sydney, who has boon inquiring as to the possibilities of drawing supplies for the Australian and China stations from Now Zealand, lias left for his homo by the Mooraki because of a domestic bereavement. Mr Munro, of the Department of Industries and Commerce, will complete thq inquiries.

Late English files record the death of the Most Dev Bartholomew Wood lock, D.D., formerly Roman Catholic Bishop of Ardagh. which occurred in December at AIT Hallows College, Dublin, where ho had resided since resigning the See of Ardagh six years ago. Tie was ordained in Rome in 184-1, and succeeded Dr (afterwards Cardinal) Newman as rector of the Catholic Hniversity (Ireland) in 18G1, being appointed Bishop of Ardagh in 1879.
