WELLINGTON RACING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING. SECOND DAY.
For the concluding day of its summer meeting, held at the Hubt Park ou Saturday, . the 'Wellington Racing Club mas again favoured with splendid weather. The attendance mas largo, though not as numerous as on Thursday. Soino good racing was witnessed, and in only; two events during the afternoon 'did the absolute first favourite get home. All the eight acceptors wont out to contest the Racing Club Handicap, which resulted in a big surprise. Fallas, who a poor show over his favourite distance —five furlongs—on Thursday, shot away at the start, and making the pace .a cracker, won all the way, in particularly good time. Cannio Ghiel came with a rattle at the finish, and heat Canteen for second pdaco. The favourite (Hinctaura) was never prominent, and appeared to bo in trouble when called upon for an effort three furlongs from homo. Narcotic, who carried most money in tho Pouoko Hack Handicap, ran ,well, but would probably have been better suited with a furlong less distance. Catherine Gordon won all tho way, .Shackle beating Narcotic for second place in tho last few strides. Tho stewards were some time considering a protest against tho first and second horses for alleged inconsistency compared with their form on tho first day. The objection was disallowed. The Wellesley Stakes was considered a foregone conclusion for King Log, tho Yaldhurst representative'. He got well away, and was a couple of lengths ahead of Treadmill when half tho distance was covered. Tho Bill of Portland colt joined the leader at tho top of tho straight, and finishing well under tho whip, .won by a head in smart time. Tho victory of Sir George Clifford’s colt was heartily cheered.
Tho concluding event on the programme, the Pencarrow Hack Handicap, brought about the biggest surprise of tlio.meeting. Waikakaho, owned and trained by I. Janies, at the Hutt, hopped off in front, and won all the way. He paid his fifty-eight supporters £23 Is each. Aldinga, who had been doing good track work before the meeting, just beat Good Intent, wbo was a good favourite for second place. Although there was practically nio betting on the two classic races, the totalisator turnover reached tlio respectable total of £9497.' This amount made a grand total of £23,434 for the two days. Last year £26,831 was handled in three days. The details in connection with the meeting were carried out in a capable manner by Mr J. F. Clark (secretary).
