FRIDAY, JANUARY 23. (Before Dr A., McArthur. S.M.) Eight first offending inebriates were dealt” with. Charles Aiolvor, a . previously convicted drunkard, was 11 ~ rioted and discharged. Henry McCormick was sentenced to ono mouths imprisonment for habitual drunkenness. Herman Zoilcr, a young man,tho New Zealand representative of a Melbourne firm of paper merchants, appeared oft remand to answer a charge of having obtained from Boatrioo Pmnock tho sum of £lO by means of false pretences, with intent to defraud, at Wellington, on tho 3rd inst. Air Herd-man appeared for the accused, and stated that the informant did not wish to proceed further with the case. The accused came from Auckland to Wellington some time ago in order to interview several local firms with tho idea of inducing thorn to purchase paper. Ho stayed at the. Trooadero private hotel, and gave Mrs Fiunock a cheque, drawn at Auckland, for £lO for board. Ho asked tho Melbourne firm to place his salary to his credit in a bank at Auckland. The cheque for £lO was duly presented for payment, but at that time the money from Melbourne had not arrived. When Zoller discovered this ho paid Mrs Pinnook £lO, and consequently she had not heen pStr to any loss. Two citizens were prepared to give evidence on behalf of the accused. Inspector Ellison said the police aid not Jay tho information, and if his Worship considered that Air Herdman’s explanation was satisfactory ho would raise no objection to the withdrawal of tho charge. His Worship considered the explanation satisfactory, and tho charge was withdrawn. Henry Hilton Thompson pleaded guilty to having stolon'a trunk containing clothing, etc., valued at £o, and £2 in money, tho property of Walter Brown, on.tho 7th inst., and to having stolon a bicycle, valued at £lO, tho property of James B. Speed, on 13th inst. Inspector Ellison stated that the accused had been committed to tho Industrial School for breaking and entering, and had been previously convicted for theft., A sentence of three-months’- imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on the first charge,and six months’ hardUabour on tho second; terms of imprisonment to bo cumulative. Thompson was further charged with the theft of bicycles at Christchurch. On tho application of Inspector Ellison, tho defendant was remanded to appear at Christchurch to answer" tho charges on tho 31st inst. Edward Robertson was charged with having used obscene language on a tram car on tho 22nd inst. Tho defendant stated that he was under the influence of drink at tho time, aud was not aware of wlTac ho said. Two tramway officials deposed that Robertson did not appear to bo drunk. Ho made use of the language recorded during tho journey from Grey street to Constable street. A fino of £3. in default fourteen days’ imprisonment, was imposed. • Clara Doyle was convicted and discharged for having boon drunk, and was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment for having used indecent language in North street.

At tho Alonnt Cook Police Station, before Air R. E. Bannister, J.P., three first offending inebriates wore convicted. George Harrison,, for a second offence of drunkenness, was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment.
