By a boiler explosion in Chicago, eleven lives were lost. Dr Joseph Parker, the well-known Congregationalist preacher, is dead. An old man named John Walker was burned to death at Aramoho yesterday. Mr John Dillon, who is in a Chicago hospital, is so seriously ill that his wile has been summoned. An extensive strike of sailors, who demand higher pay, is hampering shipping work at French ports. At the Elingamito inquiry on Saturday, the evidence of the fourth engineer of tho ill-fated vessel was taken. Don Walker, the well-known cyclist, has been disqualified for a month by the authorities of the Austral Wheel meeting. Sir Joseph Ward has been presented with an address at Queenstown. In replying, he defended the action of the Government regarding the Lake Wakatipu steamer service.
