MELROSE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
r J he Melrose Borough Council met last night, Air Kecno (Mayor) presiding. There wore also presents—Councillors Fullfprd, Jennings, Brown, Nicol, lUnd. Jacobsen, Heginbotham, Crawford and Jorgensen.
It was resolved that the matter of taking over Tanera Crescent, Fitchet- , town, bo proceeded with by special order, in accordance with the Act. A deputation waited on tiro Council to ask that a half-mile road be constructed through tho Town Holt to connect Rusaoll terrace with Haughton Hay road. The residents of the viciin expressed through the deputation their willingness to be. specially taxed for t'.io cost of making tho road. The diiiiouity in the inattar, according to Mr T. K. Macdonald, was that a lease of the holt was held by a Mr Russell, who wiglit not givo his consent to the making ot tho road. Tho 3Jayor told tho deputation that, failing an equitable arrangement being made with Mr Russell by tiio Borough Council, that body would approach tho City Council with a view to getting the lease cancelled. Tho engineer submitted tho following for work to bo done in the several wards of tho borough;— Kilbirnio ward—Formation in Overton terrace, £l4O (less one-third to be contributed by residents—say £40); widening Evans Ray road near Wellington road, £75; footpaths in tho Hamilton road and Nelson street, 75. Alternative estimates for widening portion of Seatoun road— (a) Concrete wall with backing, also widening at narrow places, with drain, extensions, £S4U; (bl stone-pitched wall set in cement mortar with hacking, widening in narrow places, and drain extensions, £382; (ci widening by 12ft, stone pitching, £2OO. Island Bay and Ohiro—Formation of portion of Tamar street, 20ft wide, with culvert in the parade, £185; formation of Deo street East and portion of Adelaide road, £202 14s ; layingVipo-drain across tho parade into Avon street, £26; extension of Evelyn terrace, Vcgeltown. £25. It was decided that tho proposals as to Overton terrace and Tamar street be Bold over until tho residents chiefly affected indicate that they will bo liable for a third of the cost. Tho third proposal as to Seatoun road widening (£200) was.adopted. Councillor Jennings wished to place the financial position of the Council before members. When these works had been concluded, tho Council would owe £3654 as near as any man could reasonably estimate tho position. That would bo tho state of tho Council’s finances at the cud of tho Council’s financial year. Tho information was ro-
ceivod. Councillor Brown moved, as an amendment, that this Council sanction tho works at Evelyn terrace. Vogcltown (coat £25), but refuse to authorise the carrying out of tho other works specified. This was lost by six votes to four. The motion to call for tenders for tite ■works specified was carried by the same majority. It was decided that, provided arrangements could bo made with Mr Russell, tenders bo colled for fencing tho proposed road from Russolh terrace. A deputation of members of the Council was set up to wait upon the Premier regarding tho subsidy promised to the Council at Coronation time. It was also resolved that the member for the district (Mr W. H. P. Barber) bo requested to introduce tho deputation.
