HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho monthly mooting of the Hutt Borough Council was hold on Monday evening. Present—The -Mayor (Mr U. Stevens), Councillors Oudby, Pringle. Judd, Hayes, Do Rosa, Whitten and Waugh. A telegram was received from Sir J. Ward, intimating that he had forwarded the Council’s request, that the taking of Mr Jouunax’s property for bridge purposes he gazetted as soon as possible. to tho Minister for Public Works. It was decided to communicate with Mr Hall-Joues, surging the immediate issue of the proclamation. Messrs.Skerrett ana Wylie wrote requesting that an assessor bo appointed in two cases of land dedicated to tho borough for road purposes. It was decided that Mr Lockwood bo appointed to value on.the Council’s behalf.

The Onslow Borough Council asked if iho Hutt Council would give an assurance that it would pay its proportion of cost of forming tho Hutt road when tho work is completed, or failing this, if would agree to a friendly case being stated for argument in the Supremo Court. Councillor Waugh moyod that the asstiraucc asked for bo. given. The road, ho said, was. a perfect disgrace, and if tho combined law expenses were totalled up, ho believed they would prove sufficient to have done the whole of tho work. This was seconded by Councillor Oudby, and carried unanimously.

The Petono Borough Council wrote stating that as it had agreed to join ■vith the Wellington City Council in the matter of the Infectious Diseases Hospital, it could not join with tho Hutt in establishing a cottage hospital for tho joint use of Hutt and Petono. Mr T. Ward (Engineer), reported that the culvert proposed to bo put down in Bridge street, was at such a low level that oven a very slight rise in the river would cause the water to back up, and in his opinion render the culvert absolutely useless. Ho had therefore not prepared a plan and cost, as directed. The report gave rise to considerable discussion, as the Council had practically undertaken to do tho work, in consideration of the applicant for the culvert offering to dedicate certain land fronting Bridge street free of compensation. Tho matter was eventually held over.

Mr Freeman wrote offering to dedicate , a stnp of laud on the Waiwetn road conditional on the Council forming and metalling the road to the increased width forthwith, as ho intended subdividing tho land .abutting on the road. Mr O’Donohuo wrote in connection with the same, asking for information a s to the Council’s requirements as to reading, drainage, etc., on land proposed to ho subdivided. It was decided tor consider both letters at next Council meeting.

Mr C. P. Skorrctt (Borough Solicitor) wrote giving his opinion that there would he no objection to extending Market street, as requested by Mr Foist, but suggesting that, in order to save possible trouble, it would be advisable to obtain Messrs Riddiford and Toomey’s permission to the proposed extension. It was decided to ask these gentlemen for permission, and to notify Mr Feist accordingly. The Building Inspector was instructed to refrain from issuing any building permits for tho Waitaki road in terms of the solicitor’s opinion. Tho clerk was instructed to write to the Petone Council requesting that gas, mains he extended from Blackbridge to tho end of the borough, and from Bellevue Gardens to Whites Hue corner. '

The treasurer reported that the receipts for the month were £155 6s 4d, and the expenditure £199 16s 2d. Tlie receipts for seven months to' date were £1073 7s 3d. and the expenditure £1551 10s sd. The treasurer stated that he wished to draw tho Council’s attention to the fact that, although seven months of the year had passed, only £SOO 16s of rates had heen collected. He suggested that an advertisement ho inserted in the newspapers reminding ratepayers that the time is approaching for the impost of an additional ten per cent, on outstanding rates.
