The flags on the course wero lowered at halfmast during the last race, owing to the news of tbo death of Mr J. T. Moore, owner of Chasseur and Armistice, being received. Second Handicap Hurdles, of 100 sovs; one mile and three-quarters.— Waiwera, 12st 31b (C. Cochrane), 1; Smithy, .9st 91b (Thomas),' 2; Stockade, 9st 61b (F. Cochrane), 3. Also started —Frost list and Hauriri 9st 111 b. Smithy led by six lengths to the straight, whore Wain-era took command, and won by a length. Time, 3min 24sec. Dividend, £2 16s 6d. Wanganui Stakes Handicap, of 250 sovs; one mile and a half.—Halberdier, Bst (J. Duff), 1; Fakir, 7st 61b (W. Price), 2; Convoy, 7st 91b (T. Wilson), 3 Also started—Ostiak Bst 31b (Jenkins), Melwood Sst (G. Price), Golden Vein 7st 61b (McClusky), Bowman 7st 51b (Towers), Legion of Honour 6st 71b (Gray) and Fairy Dream 6st 71b (W. Young). The colours of Halberdier momentarily showed in front, then Golden Vein and Fairy Dream alternately led, the latter leading past the stand and round the back, where the order was Convoy, Fairy Dream, Bowman. At the back end Melwood made an effort, but died away. Once into the straight, Halberdier came through, and won comfortably by a length. Fakir made a good late run. Time, 2min 40sec. Dividends, £2 16s 6d and £2 4s.

Railway Hack Handicap, of 60 sovs; one mile and a distance. —Lissa, 7st 91b (C. Jenkins), 1; Dick Turpin, 7st 31b (Gray), 2; Cave, 9st (T. Wilson), 3. Also started—Rita 7st olb, Betsy 7st and Rukumoana'* 7st. After a false start, the field got away on even terms. Rita led till five furlongs from home, when Lissa came on the outside, and Jenkins, by excellent horsemanship, got his mount home by half a length. Dividends, £4 14s 6d and £1 12s 6d. Marangai Stakes Handicap, of 100 sovs; one mile.—Tortulla, lOst 41b (Jenkins), 1: Nioiti, 7st 101 b (W. Price), 2; Loch Eme, 7st 101 b (T. O’Brien), 3. Also started—Reclaimer Bst 31b (H. Tait), Oracle 7st 31b (McClusky), Dodona 6st 101 b (Douglas), Westerly 6st 71b (G. Price) and King Eduard Cst 71b (H. Gray). Oracle and King Edward led for a furlong, with Westerly and Tortulla next, and Nioiti and Dodona last. Nioiti put in a splendid run round the bond, and was up with Tortulla and Loch Erne entering the straight. After a magnificent struggle home Tortulla won by half a bead. Loch

NOTES BY " ADVANCE.” Two New Zealand Cup candidates were successful at Wanganui yesterday. Halberdier who won tho Stakes, has incurred 31b extra weight at Biccarton. This brings his impost up to Sst, the weight bo carried at Wanganui. Ho lias been backed to win the Cup, and is a groat weight-carrier. Whether he can stay out two miles at good pace remains to be scon.

Tortulla, judging by her _ Marangai Stakes performance, is evidently in good fettle. The race, was only worth 85 sovs to tho winner, consequently she does not incur a penalty at Riccarton. Last season, prior to winning tho Cup, the Porirua maro hod ono gallop in public in tho Wanganui Stakes, _ in. which she ran a good third behind Fashion and Tukapa. Tho following winners at Wanganui' have incurred penalties at Hawke’s Bay:—Handicap Hurdles—Warworn 71b; Hack Handicap—Lissa 71b, Arohall 71b.
