TERRIBLE LOSS OF LIFE.
EFFECTS OF A CYCLONE IN SICILY. THE KASHGAR EARTHQUAKES. (Received ■> September 28, 4.32 p.m.) ROME, (September 27, A. cyclone lasting twenty-four hours swept over Catania, in Sicily. A German steamer foundered in the storm. 1 Groat havoo was done by the swollen streams, and it is estimated that four hundred persons have perished. At Modica a hundred bodies were recovered.
The flood swept everything from the ground floors of buildings in the lower streets.
The torrent inland destroyed bridges and roads, and several houses were washed away with their inmates at Scicli.
Tthe craters of Vulcano and Stromboli were active. -
CONSTANTINOPLE, September 27. The fatalities through the recent earthquakes in the Kashgar district, including Artush, totalled 667, and a thousand persons were injured. Extreme heat was experienced after the earthquakes.
FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT,
(Received September 29, 1 a.m.) PARIS, September 28.
Owing to a pointsman’s error, the express train from Lille to Paris was derailed at Arlena, and ran into a siding which was* undergoing repairs. , The train was telescoped, twenty persons being killed and twenty-five injured several fatally.
