A meeting of leading citizens, convened by the Chancellor, was he-u today to consider the financial position of the Otago University and to take steps to place tho finance on a sound basis. A circular issued showed that tho falling off in rents from endowments was £2270 yearly. To carry out tho work op which tho university is now engaged an additional income of £SOO was required. More than this, however, was needed to establish a Chair of Physiology, and place it on a sound basis £ISOO was required.
Mr Justice Williams, chancellor, who presided, explained (ho position, referring to tho liberality of the press, the public and the Government. On tho morion of tho liov A. Cameron, seconded by Mr G. Fenwick, it was resolved that the university endowment fund be raised, and that an appeal be made to the people for that purpose.
On the motion of Mr G. Bell, a strong committee, representing life mercantile, legal, medical 'and clerical interests and graduates and past students, was appointed to give effect to the first resolution-
Bishop Ncvill. Acting-Primate, who was among tho speakers, , announced that the .Acting-Premier had given notice of a Bill, to authorise the Savings Bank Trustees to pay over to the university £6500 out of its surplus profits. , Tho statement was received with great applause.
