HOCKEY.
(By "Full-Back.”) Cup matches being finished, last Saturday was an off-day for players. Only three matches were played:—Wellington I. v. Victoria College 1., United 1. v. Karori 1., and Wellington 11. v. Victoria College 11. All had weak teams in the field, and the games were of a desultory
nature. Wellington heat Victoria College hy 4 goals to 2, and tinted heat Kaiori by the same scores. hi view ot tlic representative matches with Nelson and .Manawatu, the selection committee lias arranged a trial match between the following teams; —A 'Team (probable representative team,) —Smythe, Davies, Hickson, Bridge, Organ, Held, Campbell, O’Sullivan, AAibolt, Preston, Wheeler. J i Team—Bogle. Ruddock, Bcore, t’utnam, Hull, Ostler, Morpeth, Griffiths, Spiers, Pearson, Hickson. From those two teams the selection committee should have no difficulty in making a good final choice. Both teams have a strong forward line; the full-backs also are a good lot, and it is in the half-back lines of both teams that Wellington's weakness this year is apparent. No fault can bn found with Campbell’s form, and his place in the representative team is assured. O’Sullivan is in nothing like his old form, and it is only the weakness of the other halves that gives him his place in the A team. The same may be said of Reid, whose hitting, although his defence is very sound, is too weak for a representative team. Ostler will give him a good go for his place, although his inexperience is against him. The Nelson-Wollington match will take place in Nelson on the 30th August and the match with Manawatu will be played hero on the 6th September. Next Saturday the United Club is sending a team up to Carterton to try conclusions with the local team. i hear that Mackenzie, erstwhile of the K'arori team, is forming a hockey club at Levin, and is also interesting the Otaki people in the game. This is good news, and I hope "Mac.” will be successful in his endeavours. Manawatu should try and get this dashing player into their fold, in view of their match with Wellington.
